Rick's Leadership Conference Experience!

Posted: August 18, 2015

From Rick Sloan, ARMA Hawaii Chapter Vice President:

I had the pleasure of attending ARMA International’s Great Northwest and Pacific Regions Leadership Conference July 23-25 in Portland, Oregon. My favorite part of the conference was meeting other chapters' leaders and getting ideas from them learning what has and has not worked for their chapters. The Greater Los Angeles and Alaska chapters are planning on holding a joint teleconference member meeting sometime this term and we discussed the possibility of having the Hawaii chapter participate as well.

ARMA International promises to be more "transparent" with its members under the direction of Robert Baird, ARMA's new CEO. Another major goal of ARMA International is to focus on getting millennials interested in records management and information governance so that there will be a rosy future for both the industry and ARMA itself. As an aside, Bob informed the attendees that he had lived for four years in Hawaii while in the military and considers those years to be his favorite.

It was also stressed at the conference that Records Information Management (“RIM”) has and will always remain the foundation of ARMA International. Information Governance will also play a role but not all members of ARMA will necessarily be active participants in Information Governance.

ARMA International is willing to consider and make necessary changes in order to improve the organization in both the short- and long-term. I hope that it will continue to hold these leadership conferences so that its new leaders will be able to learn from other chapters' leaders!

Lastly, I am looking forward to the next 12-months as your Vice President. I desire to and plan on learning as much about records management in order to be more knowledgeable myself but also in order to be able to contribute more the chapter as your Vice President.

  1. Tell us about your company/organization and what role you serve.
I am a Land Records and Research Analyst in the Land Information Management and Services Dept. for Kamehameha Schools at Kawaiahao Plaza. I have only been in this position for only 7 months but have been at KS for 35 years.

  2. What are your current job responsibilities as they relate to records and information management (RIM)?
My primary responsibilities are to (1) maintain and organize the physical hard copies of documents and maps dealing with KS lands from the beginning to today, (2) load and maintain these documents and maps into electronic databases, and (3) provide research of these files to KS staff requesting documents and maps for projects.

  3. Can you share any specific challenges that you have experienced as they relate to RIM?
Main challenge is sheer volume of documents and maps and recreating everything electronically.

  4. Are there any particular topics that you hope to hear or learn about from ARMA that may help you in your current job?
As an ARMA member, I am interested in learning about existing and new technologies in records management.

  5. Other than work, tell us about yourself (Family/Hobbies/Where you plan on taking your next vacation).
I live with my wife Neva, and have 2 children on the mainland and 2 step-children in Canada. We enjoy outdoor activities and traveling several times a year which includes Las Vegas, and running half-marathons and marathons in Hawaii and on the mainland.
